All You Need To Know About Garage Doors
Garage doors are a part of your home that you probably don’t give much thought to. However, it plays an important role in keeping your home safe. But how exactly did garage doors develop into what they are today? Continue reading to find out more:
The first garages
When the Olympics first started, there were no covered spaces to store the chariots for chariot racing, and no real proof of storage use exists until 450 BC, when chariots were stored in Jerusalem. As you probably know, garages are essentially a space to store vehicles, which would include chariots. The words “garage” and “garage doors” did not, of course, come about until much later.
The first stages of garage door manufacturing
As early as 1902, American manufacturers began developing the first real garage doors, which they called “float-over doors”. In 1906, the interest in garage doors picked up and manufacturers began to further develop the garage door prototype.
Eventually, the garage door systems that we’re familiar with today came into existence. Modern garage door systems include one to two tightly-wound springs attached to a steel shaft with cable drums on both ends. This is then mounted on a system that is above the garage door frame.
How long the average garage door lasts
Generally speaking, modern garage door systems tend to last for about 7 years. However, the presence of glass or added insulation can put a strain on the system, which could lower the expected lifetime. Before you have a garage door installed, regardless of the design, you should make sure to discuss your plans with a garage door expert.
