Frequently Asked Questions About Garage Doors and Garage Door Openers

Here are some general questions and answers about residential and commercial garage doors and openers. If you have a specific question that is not listed here, please contact us and we will be happy to help!

What is the standard garage door size?

For a single garage door, the most common width is 8 or 9 feet, and the most common height is 7 or 8 feet. For a double garage door, the most common width is 16 feet, and the height is 7 or 8 feet. Depending on your needs, garage door heights can go up to 10 or 12 feet.

The ideal garage door size for a shed is 6′ x 6’6″.

How much does a residential garage door cost?

There are several residential garage doors available for less than $1,000. However, multiple factors are taken into consideration for the final cost of a residential garage door. These include size, hardware, material, style, insulation, windows, and color. Installation costs should also be considered. We will work with your budget to help you find the right fit for your needs.

How much does the installation of a residential door cost?

It is very difficult to give an exact price as some variables need to be considered. Is it a replacement door or a new construction? Must we remove the existing door? Do we have to rebuild the frame and cover with aluminum?

What is the headroom above the door (to determine what type of lift)? Is there a bedroom above the garage (door insulation and noise reducing mechanism)? Do you need any extra accessories with your electric operator? What use will you make of your garage? Will you park your cars in it? Or maybe store things in it? Or maybe, it will be a workshop or a recreational room for your children.

These are all questions that must be answered in order to determine your specific needs. Request a free estimate or call to speak to one of our specialists for pricing.

How much headroom is required above a residential garage door?

In order to install torsion-spring hardware, we recommend a clearance of 12 inches. On the other hand, if there is only 4 ¾ inches to 12 inches available, it is best to use a dual-track system designed for low headroom. When equipping a garage door with an electric door opener, add 2 inches to standard lift movements. For low-headroom system, you do not need the additional 2 inches.

How much horsepower does the motor for my residential garage door opener need?

A ½ HP motor certainly enough for doors in the 8 feet to 12 feet wide range. Use a ¾ HP motor for doors measuring over 14 feet.

Keep in mind that an electric garage door opener is only meant to work as a substitute for human strength. Therefore, the door must be well-balanced at all times in order to maintain its dead weight at 8 to 10 lb.

What should I be aware of in terms of safety for my residential garage door?

You will find valuable answers and safety tips at DASMA Safety Guideline page about garage door openers, door safety and maintenance tips that are used throughout the industry.

Garage doors are increasingly becoming the main entrance for home. Thus, it is important to remember that a garage door is not a toy. Carefully explain these safety rules to your children.

Why is my garage door opening by itself?

There are a few unusual factors that can cause your door open by itself. There could be a misalignment of the photoelectric reversal sytem, there may be an obstruction near the the threshold or sensors, or a power surge or lightning may have damaged the electrical circuits. With older garage door openers, it is possible that one of your neighbors has the same programming on their opener remote, thus affecting your opener.

Is all residential hardware the same?

No, not really. For greater sturdiness for your garage door and to extend its life, using 14-gauge tracks, with mounting brackets welded to the tracks, rather than riveted or fastened (clips) is recommended. When shopping for a garage door, make sure the rollers come with a mechanism of at least 10 ball bearings. These steel rollers are covered with rigid nylon and are much quieter.

What can I do to reduce the noise of the garage door in my condo or apartment building?

It often happens that the garage is below a room in a condo or apartment building where the noise of the door opening and closing may cause a problem.

What can you do? Here are some basic tips if the building is constructed in wood.

  • Change the steel rollers for nylon rollers
  • Choose an opener with a belt drive instead of a chain drive
  • If you already have an opener with a chain drive, you can get a vibration isolator kit.
  • A torsion-type spring will be less noisy and the choice of an aluminum door (lighter door) will reduce the noise.

Finally we advise you to do regular lubrication of the rollers and the tracks. If the building is concrete-based, noise transmission is even more significant.

Is it better to open and close my commercial or industrial door manually or electrically?

In all cases, it is best to equip the door with an electric garage door operator instead of pull cord or pull chain.

There are basically two categories of electric garage door operators: trolley (central) and jackshaft (wall-mounted). Since mid-2014, some operators come with the latest technology and can be controlled remotely via a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Additionally, when at all possible, install a three-phase motor with the highest voltage available.

If you choose to manually open and close your garage door, ask for a chain hoist when the height of the door exceeds 12 feet.

How much does the installation of a commercial or industrial garage door cost?

Trying to estimate a price for budget purposes is difficult because there are several variables that can influence the price of installation:

  • the type of door to meet your needs
  • the type of lift mechanism and clearance (distance floor to ceiling)
  • the components and accessories for your project
  • whether manual operation or electric door opener

Choosing a door system that is strong enough for the work you have planned is essential. This way you can avoid unexpected repairs.
