Features of Residential Garage Door Openers

Today’s garage door openers have many different features compared to garage doors when they were first created. Some of the common features found in every opener include:

  • Photoelectric sensor or “seeing eyes”
  • Pressure-sensing technology
  • A trolley quick release handle

These features were developed for the safety of young children and to prevent the garage door from hitting an object as it comes down. While an injury may still occur, these features have considerably improved the safety of the automatic garage door operation.

Mechanical Drive System

The main things to consider are types of mechanical drive systems the door opener utilizes. The three main types are:

  • Screw-driven: Screw-driven openers typically provide the fastest opening of most garage doors. In addition to being the fastest at opening the garage door, they are the easiest to maintain compared to other types of garage door openers.
  • Belt-driven: Belt-driven openers are the quietest of all the garage door openers. Regardless of seeming flimsy and delicate, the rubber belt is reinforced by steel for durability and longevity. Like screw-driven models, belt-driven openers also provide a maintenance-free operation, but these garage door openers cost more than their counterparts.
  • Chain-driven: If cost is your main concern, then the chain driven openers are the least expensive option available. While chain driven models are the least expensive and the most common in homes across the United States, the durable construction is a long-proven method for opening a door. However, these garage door openers require more maintenance.

Remote Operation and Battery Backup

The second main feature to be examined is if the garage opener is able to accept remote keypads and operate with a battery backup. A few openers on the market are not able to accept additional components, but these models are commonly found at lower prices. A large number of automatic garage door openers contain keypads and extra transmitters. Some also include a backup battery, which will allow the continued automatic operation of the garage opener in the event of a power outage. More expensive openers also allow the transmitter to operate more than one garage door or gate for convenience.

Horse Power Rating

The most important feature of any garage door opener, however, is the horse power rating. Carriage gates or solid wood construction will determine what opener you should buy according to rating. If the garage door is made of steel, fiberglass or wood composite, a 1/2 horse power rated garage door opener should work. For maximum longevity and superior lifting capabilities, on the other hand, you might want to consider a 3/4 horse power rated garage door opener.
